Preconception Care
There are some simple things to consider prior to conception and a visit to your regular GP for a discussion and general health check would be very useful.
Medical history discuss with your doctor your and your medical history .
There may be some conditions that may impact on your fertility like endometriosis,pelvic infections
Other condition need to be optimised prior to pregnancy like thyroid problems,diabetes, hypertention, depression…..
Medications – some medications are contraindicated or harmful during pregnancy and your doctor will change you to a different medication that is can be used safely without compromising your treatment.
Family history- there may be birth defects ,genetic disorders and hereditary conditions in your and your partners family that are best discussed with the regular doctor who may need to organise genetic counseling where needed.
Immunisation get your doctor to check your immunity for Rubella, Varicella, hepatitis B.vaccination or a booster may be needed.
Folic Acid it is recommended women trying to conceive should take folic acid periconceptionally .a tablet of 400MCG (0.4 MG)is usually you have beed advised to take higher dose.
Weight,Diet and exercise-
Healty lifestyle ,diet and exercise is recommended. Aim to keep your body weight/ BMI close to normal for your body. Ask your doctor for advise or see a dietician if needed.
Stop smoking, limit alcohol and caffeine intake-
caffeine is not just contained in tea and coffee you’ll also find it in chocolate,Coke, energy drinks and many over-the-counter medications
Monitor your cycle-
Make simple notes of your cycle length and fertile period for few months .if unsure can discuss with your doctor.
Medical insurance-
If privately insured it may be worth checking that your insurance covers pregnancy and fertility treatment if needed.
